Raised in Spanish Town, St Catherine, Conroy Blake’s journey began in a community deeply affected by poverty. He experienced the struggles of inadequate housing firsthand and understands the harsh reality faced by many families in Jamaica. Now, as an immigrant and successful entrepreneur in the United States, Blake is determined to give back to his homeland by introducing viable housing alternatives to low-income families.
“Growing up in Thompson Pen, I saw the deplorable living conditions many faced due to financial constraints,” Blake shared. This inspired him to launch Green Block Development, a company designed to provide eco-friendly homes made from repurposed shipping containers, making better living conditions accessible to those in need.
Affordable and Sustainable Housing Options
Blake and his team at Green Block Development recognize the potential of transformed shipping containers, which can be converted into comfortable homes at a fraction of the cost of traditional building materials. A standard container home—from as low as $65,000 (approximately $8.1 million)—includes two to three bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, living room, laundry area, and even a verandah. Equipped with modern amenities, the homes also feature air conditioning and a water tank, creating an inviting living environment.
“There’s significant cost efficiency,” Blake explained. “Container homes can be built for at least 45% less than traditional cement homes.” The logistics of obtaining a shipping container in the United States and repurposing it for housing enables significant savings that can benefit marginalized communities back in Jamaica.
A Commitment to Local Impact: The Green Yard Foundation
To further his mission, Blake has established the Green Yard Foundation, a charitable initiative focused on enhancing the living standards of low-income Jamaicans. With every home built in the US, a portion of the proceeds will fund this mission, helping to address the housing crisis and improve overall community well-being.
“We aim to partner with the Jamaican government and other stakeholders to minimize housing costs for those who need it the most,” he said, highlighting the importance of collaboration in driving impactful change.
Addressing Concerns
While container homes might not appeal to everyone initially, Blake is dedicated to addressing common concerns, particularly regarding the challenges posed by Jamaica’s tropical climate. He acknowledges that containers can absorb heat but assures that effective insulation will be used to maintain a comfortable atmosphere. Each home will come equipped with air-cooling systems to mitigate the heat of the tin structure.
Furthermore, Blake reassures potential homeowners about the longevity of container homes. “With proper maintenance, a container home could last a lifetime. Our structures are constructed from corrosion-proofed corrugated steel and treated to endure the elements,” he explained.
The Process of Building
Constructing a shipping container home takes significantly less time than traditional homes—approximately two to three weeks—making it an expedient solution for urgent housing needs. Additionally, the security features associated with container structures are noteworthy, with thief deterrents stronger than what conventional homes can offer.
Blake emphasized the environmental benefits of utilizing shipping containers. Rather than being discarded, these containers can be repurposed, reducing waste and conserving energy. Recycling one 40-foot shipping container can save about 8,000 kilowatt-hours of energy typically consumed in melting it down for repurposing.
